Novomatic were founded in Austria back in 1980 by Professor Johann F. Graf. Within years, they had expanded into Netherlands, France, Germany and Switzerland, before opening a brand in South Africa in 1988.

In 1997, they launched their first multi-player machine, which allows up to 250 players to play live roulette at the same time. This was considered a significant step forward in the gambling industry.

In 2005, the company saw its annual turnover exceed €1 billion.

In 2010, they expanded into the online gambling industry by acquiring a controlling stake in the London-based company, Greentube studio. They then purchased Canada-based Bluebat Games studio in 2015 to expand their online presence further.

Their growth continued further when, in 2018, they completed the purchase of 52% of the Australian gambling equipment maker, Ainsworth Game Technology Limited for around €300 million.

The group's expansion continues all the time - they now have locations in about 50 countries and export gaming equipment to more than 100 countries.
