What are the Rules of Roulette?

Roulette is an exciting casino game that’s easy to play and offers some pretty good payouts. The game’s played with a large wheel that has a series of numbered slots. The croupier spins the wheel in one direction and drops a small metal ball onto it. The ball rolls along an outer track and eventually lands in one of the slots – this is the winning slot and anyone who’s placed a bet that covers this slot wins.

American vs European Roulette

If it’s American roulette you’re playing, the wheel will have 38 slots in total. Of these, 36 will be numbered 1-36 (each one of these will be either red or black), while the remaining two slots will be a green 0 and a green 00. In European roulette, there are 37 slots: numbers 1-36, plus a 0 slot.

When you play live roulette, the main advantage is that an actual, real-life wheel is used, not a computer-generated one. When you play live games of roulette, the dealer spins the wheel and drops the ball onto it; you then get to watch with anticipation as the ball turns around, gradually losing momentum and coming to land in one of the slots. Playing live transforms the roulette experience. It’s much more exciting playing with a physical wheel, even if you aren’t physically there, as opposed to an animated wheel.

Roulette Bet Types

With live roulette, there are two main betting types: inside bets have higher payouts but lower chances of winning; outside bets have lower payouts but higher chances of winning. Examples of inside bets include the single number bet, betting on a row of three numbers on the standard roulette betting table, and betting on two numbers next to each other on the betting table. As for outside bets, these include betting that the winning slot will be red or black, or that the winning number will be even or odd. You can also place bets that cover a selection of 12 or even 18 numbers.

The RTP for Live Roulette

What exactly is RTP? It’s a figure, represented as a percentage, that indicates roughly how much of your money a game should pay you back over long-term play. For the vast majority of online casino games, the figure is somewhere in the 90s. There are two types of RTP: theoretical and actual. The theoretical RTP is the figure you’ll find online for casino games. Before games come out, they’re tested a vast number of times (usually hundreds of thousands) to determine what the average payout is – this is the theoretical RTP. If a roulette game, for instance, undergoes a load of tests and returns 95% of all money spent on it, its RTP will be given as 97%.

Whatever a game’s theoretical RTP is, you’re not going to receive that exact percentage of your money back every time. A lot of the time, you won’t win and the RTP for that particular go will be 0%. Sometimes you will win and the RTP for a winning bet will be in the hundreds, if not thousands. The way RTP works, the more you play a game, the more your actual RTPs for individual goes will average out and get closer to the game’s theoretical RTP.

European roulette has an estimated theoretical RTP of 97.3%. As for American roulette, its theoretical RTP is lower at 94.74% (because the American roulette wheel has one extra pocket).

Level up your roulette experience with live versions of the game. You’ll find the best live roulette online games at many of the most highly rated online casinos available to players in the USA.
