Relax Gaming have created a pretty-looking slot in Phoenix Up Cash, although we would have liked to see a little more emphasis on the Phoenix theme, both on the reels and in the backdrop. The gameplay, meanwhile, is something of a mixed bag. The Instant Cash Wins system deserves credit for creativity but is the only real selling point of a base game with such a small range of paying symbols. In contrast, the Free Spins Bonus is much better. We loved the Magnificent Trail System, which effectively announces that a Bonus is on its way ten or more spins in advance and can be spectacularly rewarding, thanks to those doubled Instant Win Prizes.

In order to fly into the Free Spins Bonus, you will need to navigate the rather unusual Magnificent Trail system.

On any spin, a Magnificent Trail symbol – containing a random number of free spins - may appear in the central position on the top row. On each subsequent spin, this symbol will move one space along the winding Magnificent Trail, which snakes across the reels to end in the central position on the bottom row.

During this stroll across the reels, the Magnificent Trail symbol may randomly move two spots instead of one or have its free spins total increased by one for each Phoenix Feather falling onto the reels.

Alternatively, the Magnificent Trail Symbol may be struck by lightning. The electrified symbol will then freeze in place, as a new Magnificent Trail Symbol enters the reels from the starting central position. Once this new symbol reaches the frozen icon, the two symbols – and their respective free spins totals – will combine as one and continue along the Trail.

Free spins begin when the Magnificent Trail symbol reaches the central position on the bottom reel and sees the layout ascend to a star-encrusted sky. All game symbols remain the same, but the values of all cash prizes double.

Our Verdict: The manner in which the bonus round activates is a little out of the ordinary but works well, with the wandering symbol building anticipation as it makes its way to its final destination. We would have liked an extra symbol or two in the feature, but the doubled Instant Win prizes do at least give the win potential a healthy boost.
