Skipper's landings still need work. Back from conquering space, the bird crashes into a theme park map and burns it by accident, and what survives the fire points to the lost city of gold and to the hiding place of Captain Blackfeather, the traitor. A voice at the temple door warns of his curse and of the mummies inside. The birds walk in anyway, past arrows, boulders and a floor that will not keep still. At the far end, ELK caps the game at 10,000x stake.

The grid starts at 6x6 and can grow to 8x8, with no paylines. ELK's CollectR system pays when one of the four birds collects gems of its own colour, and each colour climbs through seven payout levels.

Pirots 5 holds three worlds under one game id: Cursed Temple, The Kraken and City of Gold. Each has its own coin game, its own catacomb enemy and its own twist. In the temple, Captain Blackfeather turns birds into ghosts. Pirots 5 piles traps, portals, catacombs and three worlds on top of the CollectR loop, and while that is a lot to learn, the loop underneath is the one from the earlier games. We like the Bonus best, because it keeps the grid size, meter progress and gem upgrades the base game built. If we had one gripe, it is the RTP: anything from 96.00% down to 87.00%, with nothing on screen to say which. How a round plays out

The four birds start on a 6x6 grid, and each one collects gems of its own colour next to it, moving across or up and down. Cleared positions refill, and the birds keep going while any of them has something to collect. Gems and wilds fill the collection meter above the grid, and a full meter drops feature symbols in: upgrades, wilds, coins, transforms and bonus scarabs. Each gem colour has seven payout levels, and Upgrade symbols push a colour up them. Collect three bonus symbols in one round and the Bonus starts.

Pirots 5 Slot Features

The collect and upgrade loop of the earlier Pirots games returns, with traps, catacombs and a feature for each world stacked on top.

Upgrades, wilds, coins and transforms

An Upgrade lifts the collecting bird's gems by 1 to 3 levels, and once that colour reaches level 7 it passes to another bird. Upgrade All lifts all four colours by 1 to 3 levels at once. Wilds count as any gem at its current level. Coins pay their value times your bet, and the Max Win coin pays whatever is left up to the 10,000x cap. A Transform turns a cluster of gems beside the collecting bird into that bird's colour.

Captain Blackfeather

The old foe takes 1 to 4 birds out of play by turning them into ghosts, and swaps their symbols for Blackfeather gems. Those gems pay 0.15x to 30x each, above the 25x a top-level red gem pays, so his visit hurts less than it looks.

The Secret Door and other traps

The Secret Door rotates the grid, birds and symbols included, and cross-over floor tiles let the birds walk over positions they have already cleared. Arrow traps can knock a bird off the grid.

Catacombs

Collect a symbol on a catacomb corner and the bird drops below for a fight: a mummy in the Cursed Temple, a landcrab on the Kraken's ship, a shaman in the City of Gold. Win it and you get a feature symbol.

World features

On The Kraken, a golden Compass Cannon replaces every gem in its line of fire with feature symbols, then recoils the other way. In the City of Gold, the Golden Book turns 1 to 4 birds to gold, gems included.

Tokens

Each world hides three tokens, and all nine unlock Boss Castle. ELK's product sheets say nothing more about it.

Bonus and Super Bonus

Collect three bonus symbols and the Bonus starts with 5 free drops. If one of the three is a Super Bonus symbol, you get the Super Bonus instead, with coins raining onto the grid before every drop. Nothing resets on the way in. Grid size, meter progress and every gem upgrade carry over, so a grid that has already grown to 8x8 starts the Bonus at that size.

The coin games

Each world has a hold and win style coin game that starts with 3 drops. You reach the Cursed Temple one by clearing the whole grid during a Secret Door, and it then plays on an 8x8 grid with a Cursed Treasure in the middle and a bird in each corner. On The Kraken, any coin, bird or symbol that lands resets the counter to 3. In the City of Gold, the Mastermind sends his minions to fight the birds, and every fight sets off a coin rain.

Our Verdict We like that the Bonus inherits what the base game built: an 8x8 grid with upgraded gems is a far stronger start to 5 free drops than a fresh 6x6. The Super Bonus adds coin rain before every drop. A single symbol decides which of the two rounds you get.

That crash is ELK's opening scene: Skipper burns a theme park map by accident, and the scraps point to the lost city of gold and to the traitor Captain Blackfeather. Then comes the first world, a temple full of arrows, boulders and shifting ground, with mummies waiting in the catacombs. The Kraken puts a landcrab down there instead, and the City of Gold a shaman, along with a Golden Book that turns birds and their gems to gold. Egypt is about the most worn setting a slot can pick. All the same, the animation stands out for its graphical polish and animated flourishes.

The music is built on a rhythmic beat, with a nod to Indiana Jones in it. We can think of worse theme tunes for four birds raiding a booby-trapped temple.

Our Verdict While Egypt is about as familiar as slot settings get, ELK gives each of the three worlds its own catacomb enemy and its own twist, from Blackfeather's ghosts to the Golden Book. That variety does more for the look than the setting does. The adventure-film nod in the music suits the traps.
