What Is A Tie Bet In Baccarat?

Last modified: August 21, 2019

Baccarat essentially allows players to make three types of bets: the Player bet, the Banker bet, and the Tie bet. Before cards are dealt in each hand, you need to guess one of the three possible outcomes in the game.

If both the Player and the Banker have the same number of points in a hand, they have reached a tie. Players who made a tie bet in baccarat will win the bet in that case. However, there are a couple of things that you should take into account before making this decision.

Tie Bets Have Better Payoff

Every land-based and online casino will give you an 8:1 (in some cases 9:1) payoff if you guess the tie bet right. On the other hand, placing a bet on the Player and the Banker will pay 1:1.

Naturally winning such bets is much more frequent than winning tie bets. Hand totals that are equal for both you and the dealer (the banker) are not such a common occurrence in this card game.

Should You Make a Tie Bet?

Statistically speaking, placing tie bets is never a good idea. The house edge for betting on a tie is as high as 14.4%. On the other hand, the player and banker bets are much lower. As a matter of fact, betting on the banker lowers the house edge to 1.06%, whereas player bets have the house edge of 1.36%.

Therefore, if you want to make the most out of playing baccarat, you should always bet on the banker. However, there’s still that fun side that some players love to explore from time to time. It means that baccarat includes the element of luck, and betting on a tie every now introduces that element big time. Tie bets are not the safest play out there, but they are very exciting and rewarding. So feel free to test out your luck if you think it works in your favour!
