CLASSIC BLACKJACK RULES
Required table and equipment:
Most of Blackjack tables can welcome up to 7 players in addition to the croupier.
Blackjack can be played with one to eight decks of 52 cards; each card having a particular meaning.
Values of Playing Cards
While the card’s color doesn’t matter a lot, the sign they are showing is paramount to the game’s rollout.
- Cards from 2 to 10 get their value directly from the number they show.
- Cards with figures (Jack, Queen, and King) are worth 10.
- As for the Ace, they got a double-value according to the combination of the player’s hand, namely either 11 or 1. It’s up to the player to choose the value they want to apply to their ace according to the other cards they have in their hand.
Each player competes against the croupier, the latter being in charge of dealing two cards to each player. In the end, there can be only one winner: either the croupier or one of the players.
The first player to receive their cards is the one seated to the extreme left of the table.
With the exception that one the two croupier’s cards will stay visible while the other stays hidden; the croupier will deal themselves a first card at the beginning and then a second card after the players’ round.
Value of a hand:
The value of a hand is equivalent to the sum of the values of every card that composes that hand.
Reach a score that is as close as possible to 21. Yet be careful, getting over this number is impossible so if you get past 21 we say that you “burst” and you lose everything.
It is possible to reach 21 by getting an Ace (giving it a value of 11) and a 10 (Queen, King, Jack or 10).
But you can also get it by having 3 lower-valued cards.
The different possible actions
The player decides to stand on their hand, which means they won’t be receiving any more cards.
The player can ask for an additional card to the croupier but must be careful not to get over the score of 21 points!
The player can choose to double down their bet and simultaneously receives an additional card.
When the player gets a pair, they can double their bet down, and split their cards into two separate hands. The croupier then gives them one more card for each hand. The player who chooses this option is then handling four cards.
Each player has the option, after receiving their two initial cards, to give up. In that case, they will get half of their bet back. However, giving up is only possible after receiving the two initial cards: if the player decided to continue playing by choosing “Hit” before, they will have to get to the end of that hand.
End of the game
Once all the players have spoken, the croupier flips their second card to reveal the value of their hand. According to the value of their hand, a different action must be led:
- If their hand is worth 16 points or less, they have to draw an additional card. Actually, in most casinos, the croupier must continue drawing cards until they get a value of at least 17.
- If the croupier has a hand with an added value going over 21 points and that you, player, did not go over 21, you win that hand.
- If the croupier gets a score between 16 and 21 points, all we need to do then is comparing that score to each player’s score in order to determine the winner.
Then, who of the players or the croupier will get the closest score to 21 without getting over it?
The winner at Blackjack
the winner is the one who, without getting over the score of 21, get the closest to 21 compared to the croupier’s score.
For example, during a game, if a player drawn a King and a 9, then the score is 19. If, on that same game, the croupier draws an 8 and a 6, their total score would be 14. Hence, not only does the player have a bigger score than the croupier, but they also are the closest to 21 without getting passed it. The player then wins the game.
Another example: if the croupier gets a score off and the highest score of a player is 16, then again it is that player who wins the game.
Finally, if the croupier gets a score of 18 and the highest score among players if 13, then the croupier gets to win that game.
In case of a tie or « push », that is to say a player getting a hand worth 21 but the croupier also gets a score of 21, we consider that there is neither a loser nor a winner, the croupier must return their initial bet to the player.
