International Game Technology (IGT) has to be one of the oldest and most well-respected names in the casino industry. With thousands of land-based and online slot games to their name, it is impossible to overstate their impact on the iGaming market.

History of IGT

The original International Game Technology (IGT) was founded back in 1975 by William S Redd. Based in Nevada, they have since enjoyed expansive growth, with their focus now being on producing slots and casino games, as well as software for online and mobile casinos.

The company was listed on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) in January 1991, before IGT Europe was established a year later to tap into the casino market on another continent.

Before the end of 1996, they launched their Wheel of Fortune progressive jackpot slot game. This hugely popular game series has spawned plenty of sequels since, and continues to be one of the favourite titles in their catalogue.

In 1998, IGT acquired Barcrest Gaming in the UK and Sodak Gaming to be their distributor for the Native American market.

Their expansion continued in 2003 when they acquired Acres Gaming, which was considered a significant addition to their product offering.

The year 2010 was a landmark moment for the company, as they celebrated the production of their two millionth slot machine.

Further expansion was seen in 2011 when they purchased Entraction - a Swedish poker network - and then again in 2012, with the acquisition of Double Down - A Facebook game company based in Seattle.

The most significant move in their history came in July 2014 when Italian gaming equipment company, Gtech, agree to acquire them for $6.4 billion. The merger was completed on 7th April 2015, and the new company, International Game Technology PLC, was formed.
